So today I'm writing a post about another monthly subscription service that sends you ethical and eco-conscious household and personal products right to your door. When I say 'another monthly subscription service' I'm referring to my discovery of Grove Collaborative a couple of months ago. If you missed my review on them, you can check that out here.
But back to the matter at hand...
I discovered The Mighty Nest the same way I did Grove, through an advertisement on my Facebook news feed. This particular ad offered to send one of their monthly subscription products for $1 and no shipping if you subscribe to their service. Before I go any further, I'd better explain how it all works so you can decide if it's something that you'd be interested in.
How the Process Works
- First you'd need to subscribe here*. The sign up process is really simple and only takes a few minutes.
- The cost of this subscription is $10 a month. You can get $7 off your first order with a coupon code that I'll share later. So sit tight and read on for now.
- After you've signed up, you'll be taken straight to the shopping cart where you can continue to check out. At this point you should also be given the option of adding any other items you wish to buy from their website.
- Once you subscribe they'll send you one product each month, which is designed to help you gradually convert to a more environmentally friendly household one 'fix' at a time.
- They ship the product to you for free (plus any additional products that you purchase from their website).
- You receive the product in the post. Yay!
Sound intriguing? It certainly was to me. To add to the mystery, they don't tell you the product that you'll receive each month. Now if you're someone who loves to get a nice surprise when you open a box that you've ordered. Then this may be for you! Let me share with you some things that I like about this service and things that I'm not so keen on.
The good things
- The average product you receive each month is 30% lower than it's retail cost and always has a value greater than the $10 a month that you pay.
- The product is something that anyone can use in any home and has high ethical standards.
- You get free shipping with anything you order on top of the monthly fix.
- They have exclusive deals for members on certain products.
- They'll send you useful information via email on how you can best use the fix each month.
- It's easy to check when the next subscription will ship by going onto your account page.
- If you think the service is something a friend or family member will love (or maybe a present idea for you), then they also do gift subscriptions.
- You can choose to pay monthly ($10/month) or purchase a whole year ($99/year) and can cancel anytime by signing into your account.
The not so good things
- Not knowing what product you're going to get each month could be a problem for some people (including me). Especially if you like to plan ahead with your shopping. You may end up with something that covers the use of a product that you've already bought a lot of because it was on offer somewhere else.
- Due to the price being so good and the free shipping, they are unable to take returns if you don't like a particular months fix.
- The products that you can buy from their online store are generally a bit more dear than what I'd usually like to pay.
My Thoughts on the Item they Sent
I received the item in the post yesterday as I was expecting as the tracking information told me that it was out for delivery. I had been out at a doctors appointment when the post was delivered, so when I came home I was expecting there to be a box for me by the front door. I was disappointed to see that there wasn't! It turns out that the package was small enough that our post lady had put it in our mail box (Yippee!). It wasn't in a box though, but in one of those plastic envelopes you can get.
Now the product was still a mystery to me. Until I looked at one of the labels on the other side of the packaging and it said "Wool dryer balls". Since Ben and I bought a line to hang clothes out on, we don't use the tumble dryer very much. Just on the odd occasion to keep it ticking over (or if it's raining!). I had actually been considering buying some environmentally friendly and biodegradable dryer sheets to quicken the drying process. But in the end I decided it just wouldn't be worth it. So even though we don't use the dryer very often, I look forward to trying these out to see how effective they are. See the picture below to see what they looked like.
The wool balls came with a small card introducing the product and also with a couple of DIY recipes. In this instance these were a laundry detergent and stain remover. I took a couple of pictures of the information card so hopefully you'll be able to see!
I love that the dryer balls are made from 100% organic hand-felted wool and are meant to soften clothes and decrease the drying time. Not to mention that you create less waste by not using disposable dryer sheets, and they're meant to last for a very long time! Definitely a product worth looking into if you use a tumble dryer frequently.
Here's a few ideas on where you can get wool dryer balls from:
USA. You can find these online at Grove Collaborative*, Vitacost, and Target.
United Kingdom. You can find these on websites like Amazon, and Etsy. They do not seem to be as widely available as here in the states for some reason.
A parting tip: Just make sure that you read the product description to make sure you're getting 100% wool as some maybe made or bulked out with synthetic materials.
So...
Would I continue using this service after this my first month?
Despite the fact that I love what this company stands for and it's mission. I wouldn't continue using this subscription service. As the item this month has proved, I don't want to be paying $10 each month (even though it is a reasonable price for what you get) for something that I might not get much use out of.
It just may be the right kind of subscription for you though, in which case find the coupon code below that I mentioned earlier.
So that's it for this review. I hope it's given you a good overview of the service that The Mighty Nest provide. Now you just need to decide if it's right for you or not! Click here to check them out yourself.
If you do decide that you'd like to give it a go, then you can use this coupon code** to take $7 off your first months subscription: INVITE7
My apologies to readers outside of the US that yet again this is only a service available here. Although I think they do service Australia and Canada as well. I did do some research into whether there is a similar service in the UK to the one that The Mighty Nest provide, but I sadly didn't turn up any results. Thank you for sticking around though, I hope you've enjoyed reading this post regardless.
Are there any similar monthly subscription services where you are that you love? Be sure to let me know in the comments below!
Take care for now everyone,
Kathryn.
